Girls and Women of Color: Embracing and Celebrating Each Other

light-dark-skin BarbiesFood for thought: Who are your friends?

What a great project —  Girls and Women of Color Embracing and Celebrating Each Other, hosted by Dr. Donnamaria Culbreth and Dr. Julie Jung-Kim.  I invite you to tune in to  Dynamics of Colorism Talk Radio   —  on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 8pm EST, which is when Dr. Culbreth and Dr. Jung-Kim will be discussing this topic; they would like to show the world that girls & women of color can and do form bonds and friendships with other girls & women of color — who may possess either lighter or darker skin. The purpose of the show is to defy the negativity being perpetuated by the media: the idea that girls & women of color continue to fight, dislike, and treat each other disparately because of skin color (i.e., light girls don’t get along with dark girls and vice versa).

Amen to that, I say! As a light-skinned mixed chick, I salute this project! As I considered this idea, in fact, it made me stop and think about who my friends are, what shades they come in, and how we came to be friends. What about you? Who are your friends?

Also, I am thrilled to say that I will be participating in this Talk Radio show, so mark your calendars for Thursday, January 22nd, and tune in!  I would like to suggest that anyone — male or female; black, white, green, or blue; will get something out of this dialogue.

Check out their Blog for more information on the project:  Girls and Women of Color Embracing and Celebrating Each Other. You can find them on Twitter and Facebook, too.
